I marble each piece by hand, using plant based fabrics and non-toxic, water based acrylic paint. I mix my own colors, and enjoy striving for that warmer mango, richer cranberry, or livelier lapis. I use a variety of techniques in my work to get different effects, including:
Over Marbling - The fabric is marbled multiple times, repeating all steps of the process each time. The ghostly, layered forms that result give the design a sense of depth and movement.
Veins, Veins, Veins! This type of over marbling focuses on creating strong vein forms, and requires reprinting the fabric up to five times.
My “Duetˮ prints are marbled on both sides, using two different designs created in a single color scheme, for an interplay of contrast and harmony.
Scottish Fold - My own twist on the classic marbling pattern, Spanish Wave, this technique gives the illusion that the fabric is pleated.
Predyeing - Dyeing the fabric before marbling yields more intense tones, and also creates color shifts like the classic yellow added to blue to make green, seen below.
Monochrome Designs - These pieces are dyed before marbling, and I build upon the color of the dye to create textural patterns in a single color.
